New fan apparel allows you to cheer teams on in style
There was once a father who loved sports very much. He wanted his daughters and wife to love them, too. So he bought them all matching jerseys — and tickets to the game.
They loved the game. They loved their dad and husband.
The jerseys — not so much.
They just didn’t look, very, well, fashionable. They didn’t even fit.
But it didn’t have to be that way. Gone are the days when fans could only cheer in their team in oversized, shapeless jerseys and T-shirts. A new generation of fan apparel for women, men and children lets fans flaunt their team pride in style.
“The last few years have seen so many more options for women and children — and more trend conscious young men,” says Cleveland Browns Team Shop General Manager Georgette Elias. “Women are our fastest growing market. It used to be you had to buy a small men’s jersey — not anymore.”
Now you can be a serious female sports fan, and still look seriously good.
It’s a trend seen across the sports world.”Fans are looking for something different and unique. Something you could wear out on the street, or to the game,” says Amanda Marshall, senior buyer for the Cavaliers Team Shop.
“Fashion colors are huge, as are fitted, more trendy looks for women. Even for men you’re seeing more of a fashion style, with a V-neck or fitted shirt.”
Kurt Schloss, Indians Director of Merchandising, says trendier looks are also big for baseball.
“There are a number of suppliers that are providing a more athletic cut for men and women — shorter sleeves, a tighter fit, finer cotton. Appliques also give it a more hip, retro feel.”
And don’t forget the bling. Glitter, rhinestones, metallic studs . . you’ll find them all on fan gear now.
They Indians even have a $145 jersey with Swarovski crystals in their Tribe Pride for Her store.
Retro look are also huge, especially with style conscious younger men. It’s a movement that started in the fashion forward NBA, which takes many of its cues from urban street wear.
“Our Hardwood Classics do really well, playing on our old colors and logos from the ’80s and ’90s,” says the Cavs Marshall, ”
The Browns also have a vintage-inspired line.
“Vintage does really well,” says Brett Reynolds, Browns Vice President of Marketing “It sells no matter how the team does. It transcends wins and losses — there’s that connection with the team and its history.”
